From Dan Shearer CV

There is a big difference between "technical" and "technology", when used in this sense:

  • Technology involves the net effect of a holistic collection of tools, products, applied science etc, and is often much more complicated than solving problems. Technology involves some idea of knowing what the human context is.
  • Technical matters can be solved by narrow focus, and often do not involve much acknowledgement of any human context (even if, perhaps, they should.)

We need brilliant engineers. We also need technologists to point out when they have solved the wrong problem brilliantly. We need technologists who can consider what collection of existing things could just about address a need, or to imagine that there is a need in the first place at all.
