My email public key allows anyone anywhere to send me email that only I can read. If you look up my email address dan@shearer.org on public keyservers, you will find my public key.
Below is a convenience copy of my 2020 public key (fingerprint 9B3F89CB4A18CC74411AB954D979BC7165D57936). You can see a canonical copy as a MIT keyserver web page or an OpenPGP VKS import.
OpenPGP keys (like those created by the GnuPG software I use) are part of the global Web of Trust. The Web of Trust works extremely well, however, it has proven to be too user-unfriendly to become widely adopted. But it works very well if we don't know each other and want to securely exchange files or messages.
You can import my public key into a keyring, which is then used to encrypt email messages. Here is a one-liner to do the import with GNU Privacy Guard if you are running a Linux/BSD/MacOS machine:
